At 14:00, Irmante and I went to Tianguis Cultural El Chopo in Mexico City which is the punk market that happens here. It is amazing!
El Chopo in Mexico City is packed with the coolest people you have ever seen in your life.
When you walk to the market from the metro, you can tell when you are getting close to the market because suddenly everyone and everything begins to look very alternative.
Enter El Chopo. Buy some punk clothes. Get a tattoo. Pick up a pair of Doc Marten’s.
The market only happens once a week, on Saturdays from 10:00-16:00, and it is sort of like my Camden in London without the hordes of tourists. El Chopo in Mexico City feels really local is pretty freaking rad!

– Purple hair
Look at these girls. Green hair. Purple hair. Selling skull apparel.
– The most metal band names on t-shirts that you could ever create in your mind
– A Luke Skywalker dress
– Badass infant clothing with rebel skulls
Need to dress your infant in cooler clothes than your peers. Drop into El Chopo in Mexico City. You will find what you need to do the job.
– Skateboards
– A guy standing in a stall selling books and wailing out a guitar solo to pass the time
– People with dreadlocks that hang all the way to the ground
I knew of a guy who had dreads like this. Once he cut them off he described life as, “Sleeping on a bag of ropes.’ It is hard to not appreciate the uncomfort of coolness.
– A guy doing stand-up into a microphone
– Weed brownies
– Sleevless rock and roll jean jackets
Need a sleevless Iron Maiden jean jacket to rad yourself up? How about GNR?
– People roaming around, looking at clothing, while smoking pot
– Every style of Doc Marten’s ever made
– Puppies for sale in baskets
Puppies in a basket for sale. Cute and sleepy.
– Leather corsets
– Long lost CD’s with forgotten names like ‘Billy Squire’
– A grey haired man wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt, playing guitar and selling used records stacked on his motorcycle side-car
No big deal, just the cooled grandfather alive. Wearing Zeppelin shirt, playing a solo and selling records off of his motorcycle sidecar.
– Giant dreamcatchers
– Books and movies
– Education and inspiration for the arts….
…well then, you need to get yourself to Mercado El Chopo in Mexico City. The market is incredible.
It is a place on earth where no matter where you look, every person around is cooler than you.
El Chopo Market in Mexico City will leave you feeling rather beige, but you will really have the opportunity to cool yourself up should you decide to make some wacky and fascinating purchases…
