“I just took my garbage out if my South Korean apartment and met a white guy named Jeff who survived the Tsunami in Thailand in December ‘04.
He said he felt an earthquake, but his dog just slept through it, so he just blew it off considering the way animals have a sense for those things. All of a sudden, some woman came running and screaming, saying, “You have to get up the mountain, there is a Tsunami coming!” He looked at his neighbor. He said they had a small conversation of, “Are you gonna go?” “Umm, I guess, are you..?” and they casually made their way towards the mountain where they found pure chaos of people rushing for their lives. Jeff said he was up on the mountain for about 5 hours where they watched the waves come in and when he went back down it was to mass destruction. There were buses on top of hotels. He said it was indescribable. I asked him about the smell. He said it was a spicy, heavy, clovery, smell.
His hotel was destroyed and 29 of the staff died. His office was in a place that would have killed/drown him and his computer on his desk was hit with such an impact that it smashed through a plate glass window behind it. Jeff had Boxing Day, 2004 off from work. He is grateful for that.”
