Lake Bunyonyi to Fort Portal: Tired Man.
Feb 11.
I got up early, had breakfast and checked out of Wilfred’s Place.  It is a beautiful property, but I need to get going and see more of the country.  Plus, my body aches from labor that it is unaccustomed to.

To get from Lake Bunyonyi to Fort Portal, I caught a motorcycle for about 45 minutes to take me into Kabale for 10,000 shillings.  I am not sure how a man can drive you for 45 minutes into town on a motorcycle and then after 45 minutes return to his village for the equivalent of $2.89. How do they manage to make money off of that job?  Incredible…

At Kabale, I got into a mini-van for 15,000 ($4.35) that took me to some gas station. About three hours later, I noticed another mini-van waiting there that said “Fort Portal”on the window.  That was where I was heading to!  I jumped out of my mini-van and into the next for 20,000 ($5.80). I rode for another four hours to arrive at my final destination when it was just getting dark.

During the drive, there where groups of kids breaking up rocks with hammers on the side of the road in the countryside.  There were men on the edge of the road sitting and playing cards.  There were kids with their knuckles on their chins, just lying in the grass to watch the traffic go past…  This is how I will probably always picture Uganda in my mind…

My final mini-van driver who drove us to Fort Portal was manic.  Sometimes the mini-van, so full of people that they could barely get the doors shut, would be driving 130-140 km/h on flat straight-aways, sometimes made of gravel and sometimes pavement.  He would take curves so fast that the van would be leaning to the point where it was worrying me.  He got so close to bicyclers on the side of the road that I am sure it worried them.  But…he got us there…

It is a long journey from Lake Bunyonyi to Fort Portal.

There was no electricity in Fort Portal when we arrived so I ate dinner by candlelight.  I caught a motorcycle to Y.E.S. Hostel that a friend had recommended where I had a hot shower and a shave.  That was a real treat.  By 22:00, I was so tired  that I went straight to bed.  It had been a long couple of days…

[su_quote]I found this lyric today.  So great! “She was a part of my heart, now she’s just a line in my face.” – Tom Petty[/su_quote]

Oh yea, click that video…
This is what Ugandan dramatic dramas are like.  They are drama shows filmed in English, then changed to another language and then overdubbed back into English in different voices.  I am not sure why they do not just use the original voices, but they must get them cheaper this way.  They are incredibly over the top.  And the people here love them!…
